Speed up your WordPress site

January 12th, 2007

Although my site doesn’t really get much traffic, I tried to improve the site response.

The best way I found was to cache your site using the WP-Cache-2 Plugin by Ricardo Galli.

For a blog site, most contents usually won’t change very often. Even if you are really energetic and passionate, one post a day would be probably the most you can do.
However, the comments on your post can change much more frequently. If you set the cache to expire in 1 hour, new post or new comments in that hour would not show up because the old cache is still there. I guess this is still a bug for the plugin, but should be able to get fixed.

Other than the bug, the caching solution worked very well. I used Apache Benchmark (ab) tool to test the speed before and after enabling the caching plugin. The speed boost is almost 4 times with caching (from 800ms/request to 200ms/request)!

If you can bear with the cache expiration bug, this plugin is highly recommended for a busy WP site!

Apple’s iPhone - Sleek but pricey

January 9th, 2007

iPhone

Just watched Steve Jobs’ keynote speech for the launch of iPhone. He is such a good speaker and I cannot imagine anyone replacing him as the best spokesman for Apple.

The iPhone was not a big surprise, as rumors had been around for a LONG time. However, the sleek look of the phone and the touch screen User-Interface still fascinated me. I liked Apple’s approach to small electronics. They built software to support their own hardware and the hard work definitely paid back. The success of Intel-based Macs and iPod showed their strength. No one else could do the same, well, except Microsoft (remember, they released Zune … ).

United Nation Indigenous People Dance

January 2nd, 2007

I wanted to try out the service from Youtube, so I uploaded this video I shot using my digital camera back in August, 2005, when I was visiting United Nation Headquarter in New York City.

Viper’s Video Quicktags plugin for WordPress was used to embed the video into this post. Really simple and easy. Great plugin!

Annoying keystrokes problem in VMWare

November 19th, 2006

While working with a Linux virtual machine, an annoying error keeps flashing past on the console:

Unknown key pressed

Sometimes it even prevents me from logging into the system.

At first, I thought it might be just a problem with this specific flavor of Linux. But the error just kept coming back even after changing to other Linux distributions.

After a bit of Google searching I located a blog article here, describing the same problem and it was caused by the Microsoft Wireless Keyboard I am using!

To solve this problem, two commands are needed to reset the extra keystrokes scancodes to blank:

setkeycodes e001 125
setkeycodes e059 126

The coming of Nikon D40?

November 10th, 2006

nikon D40
I have had my D50 for a while and loved it, and you know what? It appears that Nikon is going to release a new budget digital SLR camera: D40!

Photos and specifications have been leaked to a few websites including this one: KenRockwell.

The entry price for the D40 would be around $500 (body only), which sounds incredibly attractive for people who’d like to get great photos and don’t mind carrying a large camera around (like me). Anyway, let’s see how this rumor turns out.

MSN Sync 2.0 released by priv!

October 28th, 2006

UPDATE on 10/29/2006: That’s a quick update! priv finished a 2.1 version and added the feature to delete the corresponding Live Spaces post when the original WordPress post was deleted!
A new version of the MSN Sync WordPress Plugin has just been released by priv.

The new 2.0 version promised a great feature: any modifications of a published post in WordPress will be automatically updated to your MSN Live Spaces. The previous version of the plugin had the bug of posting both the original and modified posts on Live Spaces.

Great job, priv!
